DEAF and HARD OF HEARING STUDENT SERVICES

UCLA is ranked among the top research universities in the United States. With the largest enrollment of the nine University of California campuses, UCLA has earned a reputation throughout the world for the excellence of its academic and medical programs, the achievement of its students and faculty, and the richness of its libraries and museums. The campus, with its landmark buildings and beautiful gardens, has attracted many.

As a deaf or hard of hearing student at UCLA, you will have the opportunity for a rich academic and personal experience. Additionally, you will be in the center of the largest and most active deaf community in the nation -- The Los Angeles Deaf Community. Your time at UCLA will be marked by a variety of experiences and may include participation in university programs, student organizations and community agencies.

INTERPRETERS
Interpreters facilitate communication among instructors, hearing students and deaf students. Interpreters make it possible for deaf students to participate fully in classes and academically related activities.

REAL-TIME CAPTIONING
Real-time captioning allows the words of the lecture to come up instantaneously on the screen of a laptop computer for the student to read.

NOTETAKERS
Notetakers allow deaf or hard of hearing students to watch the interpreter or speech-read the professor. If you have an interpreter you may also have a notetaker.

TUTORS
Tutors are provided free of cost to deaf or hard of hearing students through referral to UCLA’s Preparatory Programs.

ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES
For hard of hearing students, assistive listening devices are available for classroom use.

HOUSING
Housing is available on campus in University owned apartments, resident halls, cooperatives and off campus in private apartments. Contact the Housing Administration at (310) 825-4941 or the Community Housing Office at (310) 825-4491.

PRIORITY ENROLLMENT
Priority enrollment is provided for continuing undergraduate students. This ensures that services are ready by the first day of class.

DISABILITIES AND COMPUTING PROGRAM
Computer training is provided to assist students in writing term papers and projects. Training is customized to the student’s needs.

ORIENTATION
All students are encouraged to attend the UCLA Orientation Program; students learn their way around campus, meet other students and become familiar with the numerous services available.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND SUPPORT GROUPS
The Office for Students with Disabilities also provides a variety of workshops, support groups and special programs on topics of concern and interest to students.

We believe that you will find the students, staff and faculty at UCLA to be sensitive and eager to assist you in attaining your academic goals. For additional information about these and other services, please contact:
